* It is not entirely clear as to when this ruler actually ceased ruling. Although he is styled Sultan Muhammad Kanz ul-Alam on the seal of one of his sons dated 1229 AH (i.e. before 13th December 1814) and reigned at the time of the Tambora eruption in 1815, he seems to have ceased using the title by 1821. The seal he used on a letter to Colonel William Farquhar, the British Resident at Singapore, dated as late as 29th April 1821 simply styles him as Pangiran di-Gadong Kanz ul-Alam Sahib ul-Mal ibn Sultan Omar Ali Saif ud-din. The date on the earliest known seal of Sultan Omar Ali Saif ud-din II, dates from 1242 AH (i.e. before 25th July 1827). This may actually indicate that Kanz ul-Alam merely served as regent or caretaker on behalf of his grandson, perhaps with the rank of Sultan Muda.
