1885 - 1889 H.M.
[Nguyen-Phuoc Bien] Dong-Khanh [Canh-Tong Thuan
Hoang-De], King of Annam. b. at the Purple
Forbidden City, Hue, 19th February 1864, as
Prince Trieu, eldest son of H.H. Prince Nguyen-Phuoc
Huong Hoi-ou Cai, Thuan Nghi Kien-Thoi Vuong, by his
first wife, Bui [Hoang-Thuc Mau-Kien Thai-Phi], educ.
privately. Received the names of Nguyen-Phuoc Ung-Xuy
and Nguyen-Phuoc Ung-Duong. Adopted by his
paternal uncle, Emperor Tu Duc, receiving the title of Kien-Giang
Quan-Cong (Duke of Kien-Giang) and the personal
appellation of Chan Mong 1868. Acceded 14th
September 1885. Crowned at Hue and assumed the reign name
of Bien and the era of Dong-Khanh, 20th
September 1885. m. (first) at Hue, September
1885,. H.M. Grand Empress Dowager Khon-Nguyen Xuong-Minh
Thai-Hoang Thai-Hau (b. ca. 1870; d. at
Hue, 1940), elevated to the title of Khon-Nguyen
Xuong-Minh Thai-Hoang Thai-Hau 19th March
1933, second daughter of H.E. Nguyen Huu-Do, Imperial
High Commissioner for Tonkin 1886-1888 and Minister for
Public Functions 1884-1886. m. (second) at the
Imperial Palace, Hue, 28th September1886, H.M.
Empress Dowager Khon-Nghi Xuong-Duc Thai-Hoang Thai-Hau (b.
at Trung-Kien, Hue, April 1868; d. at the Imperial
Palace, Hue, 17th September 1944), elevated to
the title of Hoa-Tan 1886, prom. to Tiep-Du
1899, Hoang-Thai-Phi 1916, Khon-Nghi
Hoang-Thai-Han 16th November 1924, and
finally Khon-Nghi Xuong-Duc Thai-Hoang Thai-Hau 20th
March 1933, née Tieng-Cung, daughter of H.E.
Dunong-quang-Huong, Duke of Phu-Loc (Phu-Loc Quoc-Cung).
He d. at the Purple Forbidden City, Hue, 28th
January 1889 (bur. Tu-lang, Duong-xuan thuong),
having had issue, six sons and three daughters:

[Nguyen-Phuoc Buu Lan] Thanh-Thai [Hoang Phu Hoang-De],
King of Annam. b. at the Purple Forbidden City,
Hue, 14th March 1879, seventh son of H.M.
[Nguyen-Phuoc Ung Chan] Duc-Duc [Cung-tong Hue Hoang-De],
Emperor of Dai Viet, by his first wife, Phan-Thi-Dieu
[H.M. Empress Dowager Tu-Minh], educ. privately.
Adopted by To-Duc. Selected by the family as successor to
King Dong Kanh, 29th January 1889. Proclaimed
at Hue, 31st January 1889 and Crowned there,
at the Palace of Thai-Hoa with the era name of Thanh-Thai,
1st February 1889. Reigned under a Council of
Regency. Deposed by the French 30th July and
exiled to Réunion, 3rd September 1907.
Thereafter styled Prince Buu Lan, Hoang-phu
(Father of the Emperor). Returned to Saigon in 1947. Rcvd:
GC of the Royal Order of Cambodia, and the Million
Elephants & White Parasol of Laos, and Legion of
Honour of France (1889). m. (first) Nguyen Thi
Dinh, daughter of Nguyen Than, sometime Regent and
C-in-C, who was raised to the rank of Tai Nhan
1900, and became First Queen Mother (Hoang Dich Mau)
in 1907, eldest daughter of Nguyen Van Thanh, of Ho
Quyen, Duong Xuan Thuong, Huong Thuy dist., by Dang thi
Tram. m. (second)
, who became the Second
Queen Mother (Hoang Sinh Mau) in 1907. m.
(third) Ho Thi Nhan, daughter of Ho Tri Phu, of Bao Vinh.
m. (fourth) Ho Thi Mung, younger daughter of Ho
Tri Phu, of Bao Vinh, by who he had issue two children (b.
1913 and 1914). He d. at Saigon, 24th
March 1954, having had issue, fifteen sons and several
daughters, including:

[Nguyen-Phuoc Vinh-San] Duy-Tan, King of Annam. b.
at the Purple Forbidden City, Hue, 3rd August
1900, fifth son of H.M. [Nguyen-Phuoc Buu Lan] Thanh-Thai
[Hoang Phu Hoang-De], King of Annam, by his first wife,
H.M. the First Queen Mother Nguyen Thi-Dinh, educ.
Succeeded, 3rd September 1907. Crowned at Hue
with the era name of Duy-Tan, 5th
September 1907. Deposed 10th May 1916, exiled
by the French to Réunion 2nd July 1916
(together with his wife, mother and sister). Thereafter
styled Prince Vinh-San. Mbr of the lodge L'Amitié in St
Denis on Réunion. Joined the Free French Forces and
secretly cmsnd. as a Sub-Lieut. 5/12/1942, served in WW2
1942-1945, prom. Lieut. 5/12/1943, private 2nd
class in the Colonial forces 3/1/1944, prom. Corp.
15/2/1944, prom. Capt. 5/12/1944, Maj. 9th (Colonial)
Inf. Dvsn. 20/7/1945, prom. Lieut-Col. 25/9/1945. Rcvd:
GC of the Order of the Legion of Honour, Comp. of the the
Order of the Libération (1946), and the Resistance Medal
(28.12.1944) with rosette (posth. 24.4.1946) of France. m.
(first) at Hue, 30th January 1916, Mai Ba Thi
Vang, Hoang Quy Phi, eldest daughter of Mai Khac
Don, Thuong Thu, of Kim Long, Huong Long, Huong
Tra dist., a Mandarin and sometime Tutor to King Duy Tan.
m. (a) 1918, Marie-Anne, née Viale. m. (b)
January 1929 (sep. 1938), Fernande (b.
1913), née Antier, of Salazie, Reunion. m. (c)
1938, Marie-Ernestine, née Maillot, of Saint-Benoit,
Reunion. He was k. in an air accident near the
village of Bossako, Lobaye, Oubangui-Chari, 26th
December 1945 (bur. at Hue 6th April
1987), having had issue, five sons and five daughters by
his unofficial wives. His surviving issue by the last two
assumed the name of Vinh-San as a family name, after
