1916 - 1925 H.M.
[Nguyen-Phuoc Buu Dao] Khai-Dinh [Hoang Tong Tuyen
Hoang-De], King of Annam. b. at the Purple
Forbidden City, Hue, 8th October 1885, as
Nguyen-Phuoc Tuan, eldest son of H.M. [Nguyen-Phuoc Bien]
Dong-Khanh [Canh-Tong Thuan Hoang-De], King of Annam, by
his second wife, H.M. Empress Dowager Khon-Nghi
Xuong-Duc, née Tieng-Cung, educ. Raised to the
title of Duke of Phung-Hoa with the appelation of Buu
Dao before his accession. Raised to the throne by the
French authorities after the deposition of Emperor
Duy-Than, 10th May 1916. Proclaimed and
installed at the Palace of Can-Chanh, Hue, with the
reign-name of Khai-Dinh (Auger of Peace and
Stability), 17th May 1916. Crowned at the
Palace of Thai-Hoa, in the Purple Forbidden City, Hue, 18th
May 1916. Founded the Order of Merit in two classes. Rcvd:
GC of the Royal Order of Cambodia, and the Legion of
Honour of France (1919, GO 1916), and the Nishan al-Iftikhar
of Tunisia, the Order of Merit of Indo-China 1st class,
the Order of the Million Elephants & White Parasol of
Laos, etc. m. (first) at the Purple Forbidden
City, Hue, 1907, Hoang-Thi-Cuc. m. (second) at
Hue, 1913, H.I.M. Empress Dowager Doan-Huy (b. 28th
January 1890; d. at Hue, 9th November
1980), née Tir-Cung, granted the title of Tam-ghai
Hue-Tan 1917, prom. to Nhi-Giai Huu-Phi 1918,
prom. to Nhat-Giai Hau-Phi 1923, and to the rank
of Empress Dowager as Doan-Huy Hoang-Thai- Hau
with the style of Her Majesty 20th
March 1933, and granted the style of Her Imperial
Majesty 18th June 1945, daughter of H.E.
Ho Dac Trung, sometime Minister for Public Instruction.
m. four secondary wives. He d. at the Purple
Forbidden City, Hue, 6th November 1925, having
had issue, an only son:

[Nguyen-Phuoc Thien] [Vinh Thuy] Bao Dai, Emperor of
Vietnam. b. at the Palace of Doan-Trang-Vien, Hue,
22nd October 1913, only son of H.M.
[Nguyen-Phuoc Buu Dao] Khai-Dinh [Hoang Tong Tuyen
Hoang-De], King of Annam, by his second wife, H.I.M.
Empress Dowager Doan-Huy, educ. Lycée Condorcet
and l'Ecole des Sciences politiques, Paris. Appointed as
Heir Apparent 10th March, and invested at the
Palace of Can-Chanh, with the style of Dong-Cung
Hoang-Thai Tu (the Heir Apparent resident in the
Eastern Palace), 15th May 1922. Succeeded on
the death of his father, 6th November 1925.
Crowned at the Palace of Thai-Hoa, in the Purple
Forbidden City, Hue, with the era name of Bao Dai,
8th January 1926. Reigned under the Regency of
H.H. Ton-Thai Han, until he came of age and assumed full
ruling powers, 10th September 1932. Proclaimed
the independence and unity of the Empire of Vietnam,
including the reunion of Tonkin and other territories and
resumed the title of Emperor together with the style of His
Imperial Majesty, 18th June 1945. Forced
to abdicate by the Viet Minh, 25th August
1945, and appointed Supreme Advisor to the Democratic
Republic of Vietnam, 10th November 1945. Went
into voluntary exile in Hong Kong 16th March
1946-1948. Signed an accord recognising Vietnamese
national unity within the French Union, 5th
June 1948 (as a consequence, the colony of Cochin-China
was re-united). Returned to Vietnam 27th and
was recognised as Head of State with the title of Quoc
Truong 29th April 1949. Installed at
Saigon 1st July 1949. Deposed again 26th
October 1955. Received into the Roman Catholic Church at
Saint-Pierre-de-Chaillot, Paris 1988, and baptised with
the names of Jean-Robert. Founder of the National Order
of Vietnam 1950. Rcvd: Knt. of the Order of Maha
Chakri of Thailand (1939), GC of the Orders of the Legion
of Honour of France (1932), Royal Order of Cambodia,
Million Elephants & White Parasol of Laos, Crown of
Belgium (1935), Sharifian Order of Alawi of Morocco, etc.

March 1934, H.I.M. Empress Nam Phuong (b. at
Saigon, 4th December 1914; d. at
Château La Pesche, Chabrignac, Corrèze France, 15th
September 1963, bur. there in the parish church),
née Jeanne Marie-Thérèse [Mariette] Nguyen Huu-Hao Thi
Lan, educ. Convent des Oiseaux, Neuilly-sur-Seine,
France, raised to the rank and title of Nam Phuong
Hoang-Hau with the style of Her Majesty 24th
March 1934, and assumed the style of Her Imperial
Majesty 18th June 1945, Mbr.
Reconstruction Cttee. Republic of Vietnam 1945-1946,
daughter of H.E. Pierre Nguyen Huu-Hao, Duke of Long-My (Long-My
Quan-Cong), by his wife, Marie Le Thi Binh. m.
(second) at Paris, France, February 1972, H.I.M. Empress
Thai Phuong (b. at Pont-à-Mousson, Lorraine,
France, 1942), née Monique Baudot, styled Princess
Vinh Thuy from February 1972, raised to the rank of Empress
with the title of Thai Phuong Hoang-Hau and the
style of Her Imperial Majesty 31st July
1997. m. (a) at Hue, ca. 1935, Phu Anh, a niece of
his mother. m. (b) at Hong Kong, 1946, Jenny Woong
[Hoang], a Chinese lady. m. (c) at Saigon, 1955,
Bui Mong Diep (b. at Hanoi, 1924), a Vietnamese
lady. He d. at Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital,
Paris, 31st July 1997, having had issue, three
sons and five daughters:

Crown Prince (Dong-Cung Hoang-Thai Tu) Bao Long,
Head of the Imperial House of Vietnam. b. at the
Kien-Trung Palace, in the Purple Forbidden City, Hue, 4th
January 1936, eldest son of H.M. [Nguyen-Phuoc Thien] Bao
Dai, Emperor of Vietnam, by his first wife, H.M. Empress
Nam Phuong, educ. Convent des Oiseaux,
Neuilly-sur-Seine, Coll. d'Adran, Dalat, Vietnam,
l'École des Roches, Maslacq, l'École spéciale
militaire de St Cyr, Coëtquidan, Brittany, and École
d'Instruction de la Cavalerie et de l'Artillerie, Saumur,
France. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the style of Dong-Cung
Hoang-Thai Tu, 17th September 1938.
Invested at the Palace of Can-Chanh, in the Purple
Forbidden City, Hue, 7th March 1939. Granted
the style of His Imperial Highness, 18th
June 1945. Came of age and confirmed as Heir Apparent,
15th June 1954. Represented Vietnam at the Coronation of
Queen Elizabeth II, at Westminster Abbey, in London 1953.
Cmsnd. as 2nd-Lieut. 1st Armoured
Cavalry Regt. French Foreign Legion 14/7/1955, served in
Algeria 1955-1958, retd. as Capt. 1958, thereafter a
banker in Paris, settled in London since 1994. Hon.
Lieut-Col. Regt. of Musketeers 1949. Hon. Col. Imperial
Guard, Vietnamese Army. Succeeded on the death of his
father as Head of the Imperial House of Vietnam, 31st
July 1997. Sovereign and Grand Master of the Order
of the Dragon of Annam, etc. Rcvd: The Boi
Decoration 1st class, GC of the National Order
of Merit of Vietnam (15.6.1954), the Order of the Legion
of Honour, the Cross of Military Valour with red, silver
and bronze stars (1958), and the North Africa Medal
(1997) of France, Queen Elizabeth II Coron. Medal (1953),
etc. m. Mme. Hebey (or Citi). He d.s.p.
