1945 - 2000 General H.R.H. Tuanku Syed Harun Putra ibni al-Marhum Syed Husain Jamal ul-Lail, Raja of Perlis Indra Kayangan, KCMG (31.5.1956, CMG 10.6.1948). b. at Arau, Perlis, 25th November1920, elder son of Tuan Syed Husain ibn Syed Mahmud Jamal ul-Lail, Bakal Raja, by his wife, Puan Wan Teh binti Endut, educ. Malay Sch., Arau and Penang Free Sch., Georgetown. Appointed as Heir Presumptive with the title of Bakal Raja, 30th April 1938. Attaché Land Office, Kangar Court, 2nd Magistrate in the Criminal Court at KL 1941 - 1942. Removed as Heir Presumptive on the orders of the Japanese, 13th January 1942. Succeeded on the deposition of his uncle, Syed Hamza, 17th September 1945. Installed at the Istana di-Raja, Arau, 4th December 1945. Crowned there on 12th March 1949. Elected as Deputy Supreme Head of State of the Federation of Malaya with the title of Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong 14th April 1960. Became King of the Federation of Malaya with the title of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the style of His Majesty, 1st September 1960 (King of Malaysia from 16th September 1963). Installed at Kuala Lumpur, 4th January 1961. Left office and returned to Perlis, 19th August 1965. Hon. Gen. 1970, Col -in-Chief the Royal Ranger Regt. 1997 - 2000, and the Reconnaissance Corps 1/1/1960 - 1963 (Col. the Federation Regiment 3/9/1959 - 1960). Founded the Most Esteemed Royal Family Order of Perlis and the Honourable Order of the Crown of Perlis, 1965. Chanc. Univ. Sains Malaysia (then Penang Univ.) 1971. Rcvd: DKM (1965), DMN (31.8.1958), SMN, SSPJ (4.12.1995), DK of Brunei (x.8.1958), PDK of Sabah (1971), the Orders of Rajamitribhorn of Thailand (20.6.1962), and Pakistan 1st class (Nishan-i- Pakistan) (28.12.1961), the Collars of the Orders of the Chrysanthemum of Japan (15.6.1964), Husain ibn 'Ali of Jordon (24.4.1965), the Badr Chain of Saudi Arabia (3.4.1965), and the Nile of Egypt (17.4.1965), Raja of the Order of Sikatuna of the Philippines (10.2.1961), GC of the Royal Order of Cambodia (1962), and QEII Coron. medal (1953). m. (first) at Kuala Lumpur, 7th March 1941, H.R.H. Tengku Budriah binti al-Marhum Tengku Ismail, Raja Permaisuri (b. 28th March 1924), granted the title of Raja Permaisuri 19th January 1946, rcvd: DMN of Malaysia (20.6.1962, SMN 11.6.1959), SSPJ (4.12.1995), DK of Kelantan, daughter of Y.A.M. Tengku Mek Haji Tengku Ismail ibni al-Marhum Tengku Besar, of Patani, by his wife, Y.A.M. Tengku Besar Tengku Zubaida binti ibni al-Marhum Tengku 'Abdu'l Kadir Kamar ud-din, eldest daughter of H.H. Tengku 'Abdu'l Kadir Kamar ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sulaiman Sharif Ala ud-din Shah, Raja of Patani. m. (second) at Arau, July 1952, Inche' Puan Mariam (b. 23rd April 1924; d. 1985). He d. at the National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur, 16th April 2000 (bur. Royal Cemetery, Arau), having had issue, five sons and five daughters by his first wife, and three sons and one daughter by his second:
