BULELENG

BRIEF HISTORY
- The principality
of Buleleng, on the island of Bali, was established ca
1660. The founder of the dynasty, I Gusti Panji Sakti,
being a putative son of Dalem Sagenin, the Sri Aji of
Bali, by a lady of inferior caste, Si Luh Pasek Panji.
This lady later married the Chief Minister of Bali, I
Gusti Ngurah Sirang Arya Jarantik I, who adopted her son.
Exiled to Den Bukit, Panji Sakti carved out a
principality for himself through conquest and alliance.
His successors ruled uneventfully until the middle of the
eighteenth century, when the rise of Mengwi as a
formidable power reduced the then ruler, I Gusti Anak
Agung Ngurah Panji Bali, to the status of a vassal. He
bequeathed his principality to his sons, I Gusti Ngurah
Panji as Raja of Sukasadda, and I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik
as Raja of Singaraja. Not surprisingly, the attempt at
joint rule was a failure. The brothers began to quarrel,
involving subjects and neighbours in a dispute designed
to overthrow the other. I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik allied
himself with the powerful Raja of Karangasem and
succeeded in defeating his brother. At his death, the
Raja of Karangasem, now all powerful, disinherited
Jelantik's progeny and assumed full control over the
state. Thereafter, the Karangasem dynasty ruled over
Buleleng, for the best part of a century. The ruler
supposedly accepted Dutch sovereignty over his realm in
1841, but later disputed this along with his fellow
Balinese rilers. In the First Bali War of 1849,
Karangasem and Buleleng suffered complete defeat at Dutch
hands. The Dutch then restored the Sangket dynasty,
though initially only as vassals of their ally, the Raja
of Bangli. Between 1872 and 1890, the Raja suffered
banishment to Sumatra, a consequence of incurring the
displeasure of the NEI government. At his death, the
Dutch established direct rule. The dynasty was partially
restored again in 1929, when I Gusti Putu Jelantik
received appointment as Regent and volkshoofd.
Royal titles were recognised in 1930 and self-rule
re-established in 1938. I Gusti Putu Jelantik being
consecrated as Raja, along with his fellow rulers, later
that same year. At his death in 1944, the Japanese
installed his eldest son and successor, I Gusti Nyoman
Panji Tisna. The latter abdicated in favour of his
brother, at the height of the independence revolution in
1947, after having married a Christian lady in the
previous year. He returned as government appointed Regent
of the district, following full independence in 1950. The
principality was absorbed into the Republic in 1952,
although the Raja continued as head of the family until
his death in 1978. During the 1950's he began opening
hotels, encouraging the tourism industry, and promoting
the arts and culture of island. Modern Bali's world-wide
reputation as a major cultural and tourist destination
owes much to his pioneering efforst during those years.
