Khan-i-Muazzam Masnad-i-Ala Nawab Dost Muhammad Khan
Bahadur, Nau Safaraz, Sardar Diler Jang, Nawab of Dar
ul-Iqbal-i-Bhopal. b. in Tirah, Afghanistan, ca.
1672. Arrived in India with his father in 1696-1697 and
entered the service of Sardar Jalal Khan, a noble of his
own tribe, later that of Emperor Aurangzeb ca. 1705, a Jemadar
under the service of the Raja of Sitamau, Mukhtar
(guardian) to the Thakurani Regent of Mangalgarh
1708-1709. Received Berasia (22 miles north of Bhopal) in
fief from Taj Muhammad Khan, 1709. Attacked the Naib
Subedar Bhaiya Bhai, defeated him in battle and
annexed the parganas of Sehore, Ichhawar, Doraha
and Bhanwargah, 1716. Seized Shamsabad shortly
afterwards. Received Jagdishpur (renamed Islamnagar) in jagir
and the title of Khan Bahadur from the Emperor
Farrukh Siyar, 3rd July 1716. Granted the
additional title of Nawab and Sardar Diler Jang
by the Emperor Farrukhsiyar on 28th
September 1718, and Nau-Sarfaraz by Emperor
Muhammad Shah on 10th April 1725. Founded
Fatehgarh ("the Fort of Victory") 10th
September 1723. Declared his independence in 1723 and
established the state of Bhopal. Fell foul of Asaf Jah I
of Hyderabad for siding with the Sayyid brothers, forced
to cede Islamnagar and much of his territory, pay a
tribute of 10 lakhs and to surrender his eldest
son as a hostage in 1724. Thereafter served as the
Nizam's Qiladar or Fort Governor. m.
several wives, including (first) at Tirah, before 1703,
Mehraj Bibi Sahiba, a lady from another clan of the
Orakzai tribe, by whom he had four children. m.

1709, Fateh Bibi Sahiba (d.s.p.
before 1728, bur. Fatehgarh), a Rajput lady from
the household of Thakur Anand Singh Solanki, of
Mangalgarh. m. (fourth) Kunwar Sardar Bai Sahiba,
a sister or daughter of Thakur Anand Singh Solanki, of
Mangalgarh. m. (fifth) Taj Bibi Sahiba [Jai
Kunwar], a Hindu girl presented as a spoil of war by the zamindar
of Kaliakheri, by whom he had three children. He d.
at Fatehgarh, Bhopal, March 1728 (bur. there),
having had issue, six sons and five daughters, by
different wives:

Nawabzada Sadar Muhammad Khan. Joined his brother
Sultan in seizing Fatehgarh on the death of Yar
Muhammad Khan in 1742. Exiled with him following
their defeat.
- 4)
Nawabzada Fazil Muhammad Khan. He had issue,
eight sons, including:
- a)
Mian Sharif Muhammad Khan. Rebelled
against Nawab Hayat Muhammad Khan in an
effort to dislodge the Wazir Chote Khan
from power. He was k. at the
battle of Phanda, 6th March
1787, having had issue, three sons:

Nawab Wazir Muhammad Khan
Bahadur, Nawab Regent of Dar
ul-Iqbal-i-Bhopal. b.
before 9th June 1766, educ.
privately. A distinguished
soldier who served in the forces
of the Rawat of Rajgarh and the
Nizam of Hyderabad in his youth.
He returned to fight off the
Maratha invaders in 1795. Wazir
and C-in-C 1797-1807. Installed
as Regent by Nawab Ghaus Muhammad
Khan, 23rd November
1808. Withstood a six-month siege
by the Marathas at Bhopal
1812-1813, following which he
consolidated his position and
became defacto ruler of the
state. m. (first) Raniji
Sahiba (d. after November
1819), daughter of a Hindu
scholar. m. (second) a
Rajput lady. He d. at
Deori, 16th March 1816
(bur. Wazir Bagh, Bhopal),
having had issue, two sons and a
daughter:

the second Rajput wife).

Nawab Sultan Muhammad Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Dar
ul-Iqbal-i-Bhopal. b. 1720, eldest legitimate son
of Khan-i-Muazzam Masnad-i-Ala Nawab Dost Muhammad Khan
Bahadur, Nau Safaraz, Sardar Diler Jang, Nawab of Dar
ul-Iqbal-i-Bhopal, educ. privately. Proclaimed by
his paternal uncle, Sardar Aqil Muhammad Khan, following
the death of his father, March 1728. Reigned under the
Regency of Sardar Aqil Muhammad Khan until the return and
assumption of that officer by his elder half-brother, Yar
Muhammad Khan, on 30th August 1728. Seized
Fatehgarh and attempted to regain power on the death of
Yar Muhammad Khan in 1742. Defeated by Maimola Bai and
Diwan Bijai Ram and fled to Kurwai and then to Rahatgarh.
Granted Rahatgarh, Bandar Jamla and the surrounding
districts in jagir in return for a renunciation of
the musnaid of Bhopal. m. and had issue, a
son and a daughter:
- 1)
Nawabzada Mian Murid Muhammad Khan. Installed as Wazir
and C-in-C, 12th July 1796. Killed
Asmat Begum as seized Fatehgarh, 30th
December 1797. Defeated and imprisoned at Sironj
by Bala Rao. He d. (committed suicide by
swallowing diamond dust), at Sironj, 1798 (bur.
there), having had issue - see India
Non-Salute (Pathari).

Sahibzadi Zulekha Bibi. m. ca. 1742, as
his second wife, Walashan Nawab Muhammad Hurmut
Khan Bahadur, Nawab of Kurwai (d. at
Kurwai Fort, 1792), eldest son of 'Ali Jah, Iqbal
Nishan Nawab Muhammad Izzat Khan Bahadur, Nawab
of Kurwai. She had issue, including three sons -
