1906 - 1924 H.H. Sri Paduka Bawah Duli Yang di-Pertuan Sultan Muhammad Jamal ul-Alam II Khair wa ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sri Paduka Bawah Duli Yang di-Pertuan Sultan Hashim Jalil ul-Alam Aqam ud-din, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Dar us-Salam, KCMG (5.6.1920, CMG 22.6.1914). b. at Istana Kampung Ayer, Brunei Town, 1889, second son of H.H. Bawah Duli Sri Paduka Sultan Hashim Jalil ul-Alam Akam ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sri Paduka Maulana Sultan Omar 'Ali Saif ud-din II, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Dar us-Salam, by his first wife, H.H. Paduka Sri Raja Istri Pangiran Anak Siti Fatima, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 10th May 1906. Reigned under a Council of Regency until he came of age and was crowned as Yang di-Pertuan at the Courthouse, Brunei Town, 15th May 1918. He introduced the first Malay schools, established the Police Force, and oversaw the first explorations for oil. m. (first) H.H. Paduka Sri Raja Istri Pangiran Anak Siti Fatima (d. at Istana Majlis, Brunei Town, 8th March 1947, bur. at the Royal Mausoleum, Jalan Khutbah Makam di-Raja), daughter of Y.M. Pangiran Tua Omar 'Ali, by his wife, Y.A.M. Pangiran Babu Raja Pangiran Anak Tengah, daughter of Y.A.M. Pangiran Maharaja Laila Sahib ul-Kahar Pangiran Anak 'Abdu'l Kahar bin Pangiran Kerma Indira Pangiran Anak Bahar. m. (second) Y.M. Pangiran Istri Tengah (d. at Istana Majlis, Brunei Town, September 1924, bur. at the Royal Mausoleum, Jalan Khutbah Makam Di-Raja). He d. from malarial fever, at Istana Majlis, Brunei Town, 11th September 1924 (bur. there at the Royal Mausoleum, Jalan Khutbah Makam di-Raja), having had issue, five sons and three (or four?) daughters:

Sri Paduka Bawah Duli Sultan Sir Ahmad Taj ud-din Akhaz ul-Khair wa ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sri Paduka Bawah Duli Yang di-Pertuan Sultan Muhammad Jamal ul-Alam, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Brunei Dar us-Salam, KBE (c 20.9.1949), CMG (1.3.1940). b. at Istana Pekan, Brunei Town, 2nd September 1913, eldest surviving son of H.H. Sri Paduka Bawah Duli Yang di-Pertuan Sultan Muhammad Jamal ul-Alam II Khair wa ud-din ibni al-Marhum Sri Paduka Bawah Duli Yang di-Pertuan Sultan Hashim Jalil ul-Alam Aqam ud-din, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Brunei Dar us-Salam, KCMG, by his first wife, H.H. Paduka Sri Raja Istri Pangiran Anak Siti Fatima, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 11th September 1924. Reigned under a Council of Regency until its termination. Installed at the Lapau di-Raja, Brunei Town, 19th September 1931. He visited England in 1932, becoming the first ruler in Brunei history to venture outside Asia. During his reign, the first road highway was opened and the first discovery of oil made. Crowned as Yang di-Pertuan, at the Lapau di-Raja, Brunei Town, 17th March 1940. Resumed control over the government from the British Military Administration 1946. He celebrated his Silver Jubilee 22nd September 1949. Removed himself to Kuching, in Sarawak, to be in closer contact with the British High Commissioner. Author of "Pandnan Keselamatan". Rcvd: George V Silver Jubilee (1935) and George VI Coron. (1937) medals. m. (first) at Kuala Kangsar, Selangor, 30th April 1934, H.H. Tengku Rajhani binti al-Marhum Sultan Sir Ala'ud-din Sulaiman Shah (b. at the Istana Bandar Temasha, Kampung Bandar, Jugra, Kuala Langat, Selangor, 11th October 1911; m. third, 18th August 1956, Y.M. Raja Kamil ud-din al-Haj bin Raja Haji Harun al-Rashid, of Perak, and d. from renal cancer, 22nd September 1993, bur. Sultan Sulaiman Royal Mausoleum, Klang), styled Tengku Ampuan from 30th April 1934 to 18th August 1956, rcvd: DK (1st class 1954), former wife of Y.M. Raja Badri Shah bin Raja Haji Harun al-Rashid of Perak, and daughter of Colonel H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan Sir 'Ala ud-din Sulaiman Shah ibni al-Marhum Yang di-Pertuan Muda Musa, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of the State of Selangor Dar ul-Ihsan, GCMG, KCVO, by his wife, Che' Mon binti 'Abdu'llah, Che' Anjung Negara. m. (second) a commoner from Brunei. He d. from a haemorrhage, at Singapore General Hospital, Singapore, 4th June 1950 (bur. at the Royal Mausoleum, Jalan Khutbah Makam di-Raja, Brunei), having had issue, four daughters:
